Vintage Zaouli Doll of the Guro People
Zaouli is a traditional dance of the Guro people of central Ivory Coast. The Zaouli mask, used in the dance, was created in the 1950s, reportedly inspired by a girl named "Djela Lou Zaouli". However, stories on the origins of the mask are varied, and each mask can have its own symbolic history.
The doll stand 2ft tall and the wides part which is the headdress is 8" wide.
If you look closely you can see the nails in the legs
This doll is made all from raw materials of the area.
The mask is yellow with painted detail
At the top of the headdress is an elephant. The face and elephant nare made from wood.hair for hands and a straw skirt.
