    Back in the day the English middle class could not afford the beautiful bone china and porcelain pieces that were being imported from China. Their answer to this was Ironstone Transferware
    Cornwall clay was mixed with cobalt blue coloring, crafted into the desired shape, and baked at very high temperatures to create durable dining ware. The English loved their pastoral scenes, and many companies decorated these dishes with the transfer ware technique, which was less expensive and faster than hand painting each piece.
    Older dishes have a blue or greyish tinge to the pottery while the newer pieces have a warmer cream or ivory hue. Crackling in the glazing is normal and lends to the beauty of these pieces.
