Description
Two years ago, Outdoor Gear Lab rated the Pieps Sport DSP one of the best transceivers on the market. Then it was discovered that it was possible, though unlikely, to have the send feature switch to receive without the wearer knowing. There was a 6 month time lag before Pieps accepted responsibility and fixed the issue. The transceiver itself is excellent- great range, easy to locate one or multiple burials, lightweight and durable. The problem was the carrying case- when the transceiver slid into the sleeve, it was possible to switch modes inadvertently. So Pieps re-engineered the carrying case because the beacon was excellent. You can see the original sleeve which I photographed and am also including in this rig. But you can also see the re-designed case that completely solves the issue. Unfortunately, during the time lag when Pieps was trying to figure things out, I needed a transceiver so went out and got another one. I definitely don't need, and cannot afford to have, a second transceiver. This story is well documented at Black Diamond so you can check out my facts with them if needed. Once again, the transceiver is in no way defective, it was the carrying case, which has been re-designed and completely safe. And this transceiver is light enough that some choose to carry in a pants pocket anyway, making the carrying case a moot point.
