Description
A pretty water scene with diving girls flows around this vintage cameo glass oblong bowl by the Phoenix Glass co. Water swirls, aquatic plants and air bubbles are part of the wonderful design. In the book "Phoenix & Consolidated Art Glass", by Jack D. Wilson, this pattern is attributed to Phoenix and is called "Diving Girl".
The diving girls have long flowing hair, with legs and arms outstretched. The sides have molded handles with a plant-life pattern and graduated spheres.
Phoenix Glass Co. is located in Monaca, PA. Phoenix began production of art glass in 1932 when 45 to 50 molds from the Consolidated Glass Co. were moved to Phoenix and used until early 1936. This occurred because Consolidated Glass Co. had been forced to shut down due to the Great Depression.
This particular bowl is banana boat shaped and is finished with a pleasing semi-translucent yellow color with some clear transparent zones (including the diving girls). The bowl is heavy with a thick glass wall. The opening up top measures 5 2/8 inches by 11 1/2 inches and it stands 4 inches tall.
This piece is in wonderful vintage condition but does have some
minor flaws and factory imperfections and loss of yellow color to bottom edge rim where scooted along tabletops over the years.
