Description
A very well wrought Verdite green couple of female, perhaps mother and daughter, busts. Crafted by a Shona sculptor and unfortunately not signed but skillfully executed. The Shona are among the best stone carvers in the world and they execute their sculptures with hand tools and patience to reveal the spirit they regard as contained within. Verdite is a rare and ancient mineral (3.5 billion years) found only along the border of Zimbabwe and South Africa. Shona sculptures are prominently displayed in museums, galleries and private collections around the world. The rarity of the stone and its hardness account for the reservation of it to the more advanced and skilled sculptors, the detail of this work evidence it having been entrusted to an advanced student/apprentice. Please look at pictures carefully to appreciate the detail and skill invested in a rare stone the supply of which is increasingly diminished.Weighing just under 2 lbs. together they measure 4 x 3 x 3 and 4 x 3 x 2 inches in the attractive green Verdite. They will be double-boxed for security in shipping and sent USPS Priority Mail. As location will determine shipping fees buyer can select between Priority and Medium flat rate, in all other respects packing will be the same. Please take time to look over our other listings, a great deal will be listed in coming weeks especially in African culture, primarily Shona, and display quality stone specimens (vast majority personally collected in the Black Hills of South Dakota, home of The Great Spirit). Those believing there to be energies in mineral specimens may well find very excellent sources in the stone work and raw materials both. Verdite is highly valued for such purposes as well but though a believer that there is something to it I make no claims.
