    Description

    Makonde, meaning family tree or tree of life;
    Magnificent hand-carved sculpture made of hallowed-out tree trunk in Tanzania during the 20th c.;
    features finely detailed, stacked torsos with two prominent family figures - the central female figure on top and the much larger patriarch at the bottom;
    excellent craftsmanship and patina; the hollow core shows how the wood was carved;
    top back of sculpture has a crack-line where the wood has separated due to age;
    there are also several hairline cracks visible near the bottom of the sculpture - please check the photos;
    Measurements:
    39" tall
    7" wide at base, tapering to 6" at the top
