Africa Benin Kingdom Cast Bronze Leopard Figure from NigeriaThe art of bronze casting dates back to as early as the year 1280.
For a long time Benin Kingdom's bronze sculptures are only historical evidence, dating back to a few centuries ago.
The bronze art of this area consists of brass busts, standing figures, bells, small expressive masks, chests in the form of castles, animals, jewelry, etc.
Sometimes the brass or bronze heads are additionally decorated with ivory.
They originate from the Benin Kingdom, which in now known as the area of Southern Nigeria.
The Benin Kingdom is not the same as the country of Benin!
This part of Nigeria - the Benin Kingdom - is very rich, free and a region with political autonomy.
Leopard figures are a property of the Oba - the ruler of the Benin Kingdom - as they are thought of as the king's animal.
The backside and waist are decorated with ornaments in the form of animal or human heads.
The bronze leopard figures have high collector's value, they come in different poses and height.
